What is clipping?

Clipping is a form of marketing where many creators cut short videos from a brand's or creator's content and post them on their own accounts. They get paid per 1,000 views. That way a single piece of content quickly reaches people through hundreds of accounts.

What clipping means

A clip is a short excerpt from longer content, such as a podcast, a livestream, an interview or a video. Clipping is making and sharing those excerpts on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

The people who do this are called clippers. They don't work for a fixed fee but earn based on performance: per 1,000 views their clips get.

How does clipping work?

A clipping campaign runs in four steps:

  1. A brand or creator sets up a campaign with a budget and a rate per 1,000 views (the CPM).
  2. Clippers pick the campaign, cut clips from the material provided and post them on their own accounts.
  3. Views are measured automatically. Fake views and bots don't count.
  4. Clippers are paid based on the number of real views. The brand only pays for reach that actually comes in.

An example

Say a podcast sets up a campaign with a rate of €1.00 per 1,000 views. Dozens of clippers cut the funniest and strongest moments from the episodes and post them on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

If one clip gets 100,000 views, that clipper earns €100. The podcast reaches viewers who didn't know it yet and only pays for the views that were actually delivered.

Why do brands use clipping?

Short videos shape what people see on their phones. One video on your own channel mainly reaches your own followers. With clipping, your content shows up on many different accounts, each with its own audience.

Because you pay per view, you know up front what reach costs. You set a budget, choose a rate and only pay for views that are actually delivered.

Clipping, influencer marketing and UGC

With influencer marketing you pay one creator a fixed fee for a post, however it performs. With user-generated content (UGC) you buy videos that you distribute yourself.

Clipping sits in between: many creators spread your content on their own accounts and you pay for results. So the risk of a post that goes nowhere doesn't sit with you.

Is clipping legal?

Yes, as long as you work with content you have permission to use. In a clipping campaign, the content owner provides the material and gives permission to make clips from it. Cutting and posting other people's content without permission is a different story: then you risk copyright claims.
